Cipher by Aileen Erin

“Don’t.  It feels like your sucking everything out of me when you touch me.  It’s unnerving.”

In the not-too-distant future, the color of your helix tattoo shows exactly how your DNA was modified—green for super-smart scientists, black for pumped-up warriors, white for the immortal Seligo—but Cipher’s red helix is a death sentence. It’s a sign of unstable DNA, which is probably the reason she can manipulate electricity.
When she was eight years old, Cipher made the mistake of showing her uncle the tattoo. In return, he killed her parents and tried to kidnap her.
She’s been on the run ever since, and twelve long years later, Cipher is tired of hiding. Survival isn’t enough anymore. She wants her life back.
Hacking into the Citadel mainframe is a huge risk, but it pays off when she finds a database on red helixes. Before she can copy it, she loses control of her power, charring her last processor, and the only person in the Arizona Voids that can get her back online is her oldest friend, Knightly. She hasn’t seen him in person since she started running, and Knightly 2.0 is fully upgraded with a six-pack and knee-melting smile.
For a girl like Cipher, trust doesn’t come easily, but Knightly makes her yearn for a life she knows she can’t have, especially when every secret she reveals endangers them both.

Thoughts:  Cipher was definitely an interesting read….the idea of helix tattoos representing your DNA was an interesting one, and the author captured my attention from the very beginning with not only the amazing cast of characters but with the intriguing storyline.  Cipher was an amazing character and I loved the past history she shared with Knight, and the lengths he went to over the years to find her.  I was impressed with the author, the series, and after reading Cipher I immediately made plans to read the next book, Quanta (though it is by separate author Lola Dodge).

Having already formed my own opinion, I was curious as to other people’s thoughts on the book and I wanted to address some of their opinions – some of them felt that the romance of it overshadowed the sci-fi portion of it.  I got my copy on Netgalley, and it was clearly listed as Romance/Sci-Fi-Fantasy so I was clear on the fact that romance was a significant feature in the book – but I felt that the sci-fi elements featured heavily enough to keep me satisfied. Just be clear that romance does play heavily into it – it is not strictly a sci-fi/fantasy book.  Additionally, there were a few comments as to Cipher strength of character and to how it seemed to wan the more the love interest began to play more heavily a role in the book – people are entitled to their own perspective, but if you read the book and are honest there are other additional more scientific factors that also play a role in why Cipher becomes a little weaker in the end…but come one, she’s still strong enough to kick some a@$!…so let’s not be so harsh on the love!  I like a little romance with my sci-fi.  So, I guess it is all in what you’re looking for.  I, too, would love to see some more Cipher and Knight in future books as I think they have a little more story to tell, but I guess we will see.  In the meantime, I look forward to more from this author that I’m glad to have stumbled upon …:)

Ritual Magic by Eileen Wilks

Feelings are not always a guide to truth, and guilt is an indulgence you cannot afford. It clouds the mind.”

In Eileen Wilks’s new Novel of the Lupi, FBI agent Lily Yu is about to confront a power even darker than magic…On her 57th birthday, Lily’s mother suddenly loses all memory beyond the age of twelve. Lily knows her mother was attacked by something more than magic. More . . . and darker.
When Lily and Rule discover that others suffered the same, mysterious loss—at the same time on the same night—their investigation into the darkness begins. Joining them is someone Lily never thought she’d see again: Al Drummond, who once tried to destroy her. He also happens to be dead. But the mysterious attacks were caused by a power strong enough to affect matters beyond the world of the living.
With some victims losing years of memory and others their lives, Lily must discover what on earth—or beyond—connects them.

Thoughts:  To be honest, I dragged my heels when it came to getting this book….and then dragged them some more when it came to actually reading it.  I absolutely loved this series in the beginning, but it has become one of those series that has started to lose its spark for me.  Part of me feverently hoped that this would be the book that sets it back on track….and yet another dreaded it because I feared it would be the final straw for me with the series.  Unfortunately, it seems to be the latter for me.

With most other series, it usually comes down to just the whole plotline/story just not living up to the spectacular standards set by the previous books.  What makes this series a bit odd for me is instead it seems to be a loss of the integral part of the characters – now, in the tenth book, I honestly have forgotten why I loved these characters so much.  It doesn’t even seem like I am even reading about the same people anymore.  And that is truly a sad state of affairs since the characters used to be so vibrant.  The story is still a good one – but I miss the connection that used to exist for these characters – for example, Lily and Rule could almost be strangers they seem so different from who they used to be.  Not to mention their real, true interactions are few and far between.  It’s almost like now that they are together romantically, the author doesn’t know how to write them anymore.

I doubt I can handle reading another book in this series – it just reminds me of what is missing from those amazing books in the beginning.

Peyton 313 by Donna McDonald

“That’s because I have cybernetic eyes.  Plus I’m male.  My first response to most trauma is to beat on something until the situation improves.”

Series:  Cyborgs: Mankind Redefined Book #1

Rate: A

Worst epic fail of her scientific career? Falling for a cyborg she helped create.

Kyra Winters never meant for her cyber science discoveries to be used for evil, but that’s exactly what happened. Now returning Peyton 313’s humanity is the last chance she’ll ever have to atone. She can’t get back the lost decade, but she can change the present by restoring the cyborg who was once Marine Captain Peyton Elliot.

Certainly her grand plan for rectifying her mistakes didn’t include madly kissing the confused, passionate Marine when he begged her to. The same scientific mind that constructed the cyborg creator code now warned her not to let Peyton’s tempting offers of heaven cloud her rational decision making. Yet it’s difficult to resist the cyborg she’s restoring when he’s also the most intriguing man she’s ever known.

Thoughts:  To be honest, I have read very few ‘cyborg’ books – the only others have been from the Cyborg Seduction series by Laurann Dohner (largely because I was already a fan of her New Species series).  I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this book – though I have to admit to a few doubts in the beginning, especially when the whole ‘cyber-husbands’ and ‘cyber-wives’ came into the story.  It took a little while for me to wrap by brain around that and accept it into the storyline, probably because it is so different from my usual read.  It was a so very different from the other books of this type that I have read – but I imagine anyone liking the ‘cyborg’ storylines, or anyone looking for something a little different to read will love this Peyton 313!

This seems to be one of those books where it just gets better and better with every page!  By the end, I was completely caught up with these characters and the whole storyline.  I look forward to reading the rest of this series and following the adventures of the other cyborgs that we are introduced to.  Bottom line – I was very impressed with the author, the story, and the characters.  Can’t wait for more of this series!!

Excerpt:  Satisfied by his fierce complaining, Kyra walked back to the chair and knelt at his feet again. She had thumb-printed the chair restraint locks so a light swipe across the sensor instantly opened them. After the ankle ones were removed, she removed the one across his chest. Lastly, she moved to his wrists, pausing as she met his questioning gaze. She had to tell him what she was feeling. The urge was too compelling and his gaze was too full of hope. “Today you are more yourself than you’ve been in a long time, Captain Elliot. Since this may be the only nice conversation you and I are ever going to have, I want to thank you for your military service and all the amazing things you’ve done. I’ll even admit that you’re far more charming than your record indicated. In another time and another place, I might have been willing to play all kinds of flirty games with you. But this is definitely not that time or place. We are suspended between heaven and hell right now, and neither of us is an angel.”

“Sleep in the cage with me tonight and I’ll show you heaven, Doc. I don’t think I’ve ever wanted a woman as much as I want you right now. Sorry if the speed of my interest offends your sensibilities. I’m listening to a little voice that keeps yelling inside me. It’s saying this may be my one and only chance to get you to see I’m more than just some super soldier machine in need of fixing.”

Kyra felt her lip tremble and bit it hard to make it stop before she answered. “I already know that about you. That’s why I’m doing this. Now don’t make me like you any more than I already do.”

“See? I knew you liked me,” Peyton bragged, wishing she’d come a lot closer. She smelled amazing.

Kyra wondered if Peyton’s desire for her was a lingering after-effect of all those years of Cyber Husband programming? He would have studied her file extensively because Norton would have made him do so. He would have learned all he could about her likes and dislikes. That’s how the program worked. She purposely hadn’t removed that chip because she needed him to like her at least a little for just a while longer.

Peyton stared at the woman’s disappointed face. She looked ready to cry and he couldn’t stand seeing her that way. “How about a kiss to test your theories about us, Doc? Just one. I need it and I think you need it too. You already admitted you weren’t married. Look—my wrists are still chained to the chair. What could one kiss hurt? Come on—what do you say?”

Kyra sighed. She was as exasperated with him as she was charmed by his pleading. Tomorrow Peyton Elliott was going to hate her. She was one hundred percent sure of it because it had been proven true twice already before him.

Tomorrow when Peyton Elliott knew the truth, he would hate his life and those who had consigned him to his living hell. Tomorrow the machine would be partially back and Peyton would not be this light-hearted, mostly human version of himself. He would be a new kind of redefined cyborg. While no one knew what that was going to be like—not even her—she would bet her retirement Peyton was still going to hate her after he integrated the present with his past.

“Please—one kiss, Doc. That’s all I’m asking,” Peyton whispered.

Kyra sighed loudly. “You’re a hard man to say no to and today I’m a sentimental fool. Close your eyes, Captain. I haven’t kissed a man in a long time. I can’t look at you or I’ll lose my nerve.”

When Peyton sighed dramatically in return and leaned his head back, Kyra climbed on the electrical shield at the bottom of the operating chair until she was standing between his legs. Heat emanated from every inch of the man and he still smelled a little like burnt circuitry. Yet underneath that stark reality, Peyton also smelled masculine and very alluring.

Kyra sighed again. “I wish I could send you out the door to live whatever kind of life you want just as you are right now. That’s what you deserve, Captain Elliott. I want that badly for you, but I can’t make it happen. Your cybernetic enhancements require you to retain knowledge of how they work. Too much is at stake and the outcome of your healing affects more than just the two of us. But thank you for giving me a glimpse of why putting you through this hell is so important. This moment—it’s very humanizing for both of us—to want to be kissed and then be kissed. Thank you for sharing this moment with me.”

“Man, you sure talk a lot. Still waiting for that kiss, Doc,” Peyton said. He was keeping his eyes tight and his mind off how sexy she sounded when she got all philosophical.

Kyra snorted at his chastising. She touched her lips to Peyton’s and instantly found her bottom one nipped aggressively between two rows of even teeth. Moaning at the delicate trap he’d set for her, her body tipped forward against his and she had to catch herself on his wide shoulders. Her hands slipped over them and down his chest without her mind questioning the action.

When she moaned against his mouth, Peyton ordered himself to turn loose. After he did, he stared hard at the lip he’d bitten. The woman wanted him. He could taste it, smell it, and damn it he wanted her too. It was exhilarating to feel such pure desire flowing so freely through his cells.

A demand to sate that intense longing came from some desperate part of him that was both familiar and strange at the same time. What the hell was happening to him mind? It was both relieving and like finally waking up after being asleep for too long.

“Climb up here and give me a real kiss, Doc. And don’t be so damn stingy with sharing your tongue. I intend to use it to imagine what else I’m going to do when you cut me loose from this freaking chair.”

Groaning at how aroused he’d just made her with his sexy declaration, Kyra climbed into Peyton’s large lap to straddle him. It gave her better access to his mouth and the chance to indulge just a little more as she eased her hips down on him. She sighed at her nearly out-of-control feelings and touched her forehead to his.

“The only reason I’m doing this is because I know you’re going to take great pleasure in ridding yourself of this memory tomorrow. I won’t blame you for that action, Peyton. I think it’s the smartest thing you could do.”

“Stop whining about what hasn’t happened yet, Doc. It’s damn cruel to suggest this instant attraction between us is nothing. Now kiss me like you want to—and damn it I know you want to. I am a cyborg, you know.”

He ordered his processor to store the image of her face just as she caved into his demand and dipped her mouth to his. Her lips were lush and hot and wet, and her kiss was the most deliriously wonderful experience he could recall happening in ages. He watched her eyes close in pleasure as he strained towards her, but froze in the chair when he saw two tears run down her face. A second later, tears were flowing off her chin in two tiny, steady streams.

“What? What is it, Doc? What’s wrong with this? The attraction is mutual, isn’t it? We’re alone in here just the two of us. I’m wearing too many damn restraints to do much harm to you. Hell, keep the chair restraints in place woman—just be with me before I die from wanting you.”

“I can’t. I can’t take advantage of you, no matter what I’m feeling,” Kyra said, lifting her arm to swipe at her eyes. “Thank you for the sexy kiss, Captain. It’s been a very, very long time since I felt anything remotely close that level of desire for a man. Even if you wipe this away, I’ll never forget it—or you.”

Kyra slid reluctantly off his lap and straightened her clothing. “I’m going to release the last of the chair restraints now. Please keep your distance so I don’t have to use the controller. I’ve hurt you enough in the last couple of days.”

The Witch With No Name by Kim Harrison

It’s Rachel Morgan’s ultimate adventure . . . and anything can happen in this final book in the New York Times bestselling Hollows series.

Rachel Morgan has come a long way from her early days as an inexperienced bounty hunter. She’s faced vampires and werewolves, banshees, witches, and soul-eating demons. She’s crossed worlds, channeled gods, and accepted her place as a day-walking demon. She’s lost friends and lovers and family, and an old enemy has unexpectedly become something much more.

But power demands responsibility, and world-changers must always pay a price. Rachel has known that this day would come—and now it is here.

To save Ivy’s soul and the rest of the living vampires, to keep the demonic ever after and our own world from destruction, Rachel Morgan will risk everything. . . .

Thoughts:  OMG…that quote is so true, and definitely applies to this book!  Beginnings are better….because seeing this series come to an end really SUCKS.  On an epic scale.  From cracking open that very first book and getting caught up in the chaotic world that is Rachel Morgan’s, I have been addicted to this series.  Every book was a must read – and every one was simply amazing.  This one was certainly not an exception.  Classic Hollows material, with a classy, perfectly fitted ending….it was nothing short of brilliant.  Though I definitely want to cry at the end of such an amazing series of books – I will miss these characters dearly!

Before the cure, Lieutenant Lyle Dalton’s job was simple: kill the Reapers. Now, under orders to inject all captured flesh eaters with the serum that restores their humanity, his Rangers at Fort Dougan face entirely new dangers. Someone wanted the Reaper cure badly enough to spill blood for it, and Lyle needs to steal it back if he hopes to hold the border.

Jane Fisher escaped Scraper crime boss Gideon Moore with only the clothes on her back. What he took from her can never be replaced, but her new home at Fort Dougan is the first safe one she’s known. Or was, until the remaining supply of serum was stolen, flown high into the mountains on Gideon’s command. Serving as Lyle’s guide through Scraper territory means revisiting her own personal hell, but it’s also an opportunity—for closure or revenge, Jane isn’t quite sure.

Beautiful, proud and haunted, Jane is a temptation Lyle’s worked hard to avoid. The mountains are the last place she needs to be. But if Jane can find the courage to face down a man like Gideon for the sake of the fort, no force on earth will keep Lyle from her side.

Thoughts:  I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed with this book – I never am when it comes to Eleri Stone’s books.  But I was excited for this one, since I was such a fan of the first book in this series, Reaper’s Touch – and while reading that one, I had already been feverently hoping for more in this series.  So glad it didn’t end there!

Things have changed a little in this book – thanks to the efforts of Abby and Jake from book one, Reaper’s are no longer slaughtered.  Instead they are captured and given the ‘cure’ – which means much more work for the Rangers.  The ‘cure’ is already hard to come by, but when their last stashes of the drug are stolen, Lyle has no choice but to go after it.  Jane’s familiarity with the area makes her the perfect guide, but unfortunately revisiting her past is not a pleasant experience.  It also puts her and Lyle and much closer quarters and face-to-face with temptation.

I actually enjoyed the whole story and characters in this one a bit more than the first – which is really saying something!  This one can be read as a stand alone, without needing to read the first book.  I happen to like getting all the intricacies of the relationships from reading all the books in a series in order, but you won’t be lost if you don’t.  The downside?  There is not a lot of Reaper action in this one, at least compared to book one, so if you’re looking for a lot of that you might be a little disappointed.  Personally, I still loved it!

The first book, Reaper’s Touch, is available now (which I also rated with an A)

No matter how much the paranormal politics of Atlanta change, one thing always remains the same: if there’s trouble, Kate Daniels will be in the middle of it…As the mate of the Beast Lord, Curran, former mercenary Kate Daniels has more responsibilities than it seems possible to juggle. Not only is she still struggling to keep her investigative business afloat, she must now deal with the affairs of the pack, including preparing her people for attack from Roland, a cruel ancient being with god-like powers. Since Kate’s connection to Roland has come out into the open, no one is safe—especially those closest to Kate.  As Roland’s long shadow looms ever nearer, Kate is called to attend the Conclave, a gathering of the leaders from the various supernatural factions in Atlanta. When one of the Masters of the Dead is found murdered there, apparently at the hands of a shapeshifter, Kate is given only twenty-four hours to hunt down the killer. And this time, if she fails, she’ll find herself embroiled in a war which could destroy everything she holds dear…
**Includes the bonus Kate Daniels story Magic Tests**

Thoughts:  When it comes to a series of books, I have to admit that the Kate Daniels series  is one of my absolute favorites!  For those who follow it, there are so many things that happen in this book that it is simply a must read.  The danger they face is far more potent in this book, as Kate faces not only the not-so-dead Hugh, but also her father.  They finally come face-to-face in this book, and that alone would render it worth reading.  But will Kate finally kill him (as she has been raised all her life to do)?  Or will fate – and Kate’s self-sacrificing personality – choose a different path?  In some ways, the meeting with Roland went kind of how I was expecting (though I think it may surprise a few) – but the decisions that are made after meeting Roland is what surprised me.  And I have to say lead to some super-sweet moments in the book for me.

For those of you new to the series – OMG, you have no idea what you’re missing!  You simply have to read this series – starting from the very beginning!  This is one of those series I definitely recommend reading in order, but it is an amazing series – especially if you love urban fantasy.

You honestly keep thinking this series just CAN’T get any better – but (as always) with Ilona Andrews, this husband and wife writing team proves that it definitely CAN.

*The bonus story is worth a read, too.  We get a little more insight into Julie and her life, and I look forward to seeing more of her world as well sometime in the future!*

Bruce may have a handsome face, but his soul is darker than the night. Or so he claims, anyway.  Locked up in a mansion in an unknown location on Earth, Lana’s world slowly begins to unravel. Bruce is not just holding her hostage for money – in fact, he tells her things about her father’s company that she can’t believe. The pirate seems to know more about her mother’s death, five years ago, than she was ever told. And his kisses may be dangerous, but too good to resist.  Lana comes to realize that beneath the villainy and violence, Bruce is a man very different from the character in the stories told about him. A man with crushed ideals and a past haunting him everywhere he goes, no matter what he does.  A man she could fall for.
A slightly darker, erotic romance novel in the Stardust Series, for lovers of New Adult with a hint of Futuristic.

Review:  This book was another hit for me by Jocelyn Han.  The more I read from her, the more I like!  First off though, I am going to touch a few things about the series in general – if you’re not a big YA (Young Adult) fan, don’t let that deter you from her books – to be honest it’s easy to forget it in the overall storyline – which is a definite plus!  (I’m not a big YA fan)  Also, if it is the ‘futuristic’ aspect that might be causing you to hesitate, let me emphasis that while there is enough ‘futuristic/sci-fi’ emphasis to make it seem really intriguing – and give you a whole new world to uncover – it’s not so caught up into the details that you are left overwhelmed, lost, and confused.  Another thing?  While this one is a part of a series, it is also completely stand alone.

However, if you have read her other books, this one gave us a nice little visit with past characters that I just loved!  It was also an endearing story about a captive falling in love with her captor – and finding out that things were not necessarily as she thought them to be in the overall scheme of things.  On the downside, Bruce could be a little too rough and violent at times – enough that some readers might be turned off by it.  For the most part it was toned down, but there is one scene in particular that might be somewhat offensive to some.  So just read with a little caution.  Other than that, a great installment to the series, and I look forward to more works by her!

Will Tori and Alen learn how to face their darkest fears, or will the past nip their passionate love in the bud?

A sweet, steamy romance for lovers of New Adult with a hint of Futuristic.

Review:  My first experience with Jocelyn Han was with the prior novella Fly You To The Moon, which I found to be a really interesting and enjoyable read (rated with a B-).  This one, however, leaves even that one in the dust!  I was very, VERY impressed with this title….it was an amazing read!  There are a number of things that would have normally turned me off to this type of book – the first being that it is technically considered a New Adult (NA) genre book.  New Adult is really not a favorite genre of mine – with a few exceptions.  Mostly because there seems to be a level of maturity that is missing – I mean, even the Young Adult novels these days have more maturity!  However, in this course of this one, you completely forget that it’s a NA book – which was a definite plus!  Futuristic can also be a hit or miss – in this case, it was a definite hit!  While there is enough ‘futuristic/sci-fi’ emphasis to make it seem really intriguing – and give you a whole new world to uncover – it’s not so caught up into the details that you are left overwhelmed, lost, and confused.  And something that might turn off new readers?  This is part of a series – which may leave many of you thinking that you can’t grab this one up without reading the prior novella.  That is NOT the case – this one is totally stand alone.

Beyond all that?  The characters were amazingly likeable, fun, and perfect for each other.  I loved reading about them, feeling their chemistry, and laughing at their antics.  The storyline definitely kept your interest and was so well done that I am eager to read the next one.  I was so impressed by the advances the author made from one book to the next, that I can’t wait to see what else she has in store for us!

Abby is a Ranger, part of an elite group who defend the border against Reapers-humans infected with a parasite that turns them into mindless cannibals. Rangers are immune to Reaper infection, and as one of the only female Rangers, Abby is expected to settle down and breed more Rangers-a fate she’s keen to avoid. When she’s ambushed on the plains, she’s ready to go out with guns blazing-until a mysterious, handsome cowboy rides to her rescue.

Jake has his own motives for helping Abby, beyond aiding a damsel in distress. He’s a Reaper, and while he’s learned to wrest control of his mind from the parasite, the effects won’t last without a permanent cure. And he needs Abby to get it.

Abby and Jake are natural enemies and unlikely partners. But when their search reveals a conspiracy between Reapers and the rich industrialists who own the mountain cities, they must work together to find the cure-or lose the border, and each other, forever.

Review:  To start off, let me say that this book is unlike anything I have read before.  The vibe it struck with me was reminiscent of a number of things – it’s an odd combination that reminded of the television series of Deadwood, the tv series The Walking Dead, the movie I Am Legend, with a little bit of futuristic sci-fi thrown in for good measure.  I guess the best way to describe it is sort of like The Walking Dead meets the Wild West.  I was fascinated, and throughout the whole book I stayed fascinated.

I originally picked this book from Netgalley for a number of reasons – number one, because of the cover and the blurb.  Number two, because I love anything paranormal – including zombies – but even more so since The Walking Dead.  And third, because I adore Eleri Stone.  I am a huge fan of her Lost City Shifters series, and that’s really what persuaded me to give it a chance.  And I’m glad I did!  This is one of those books that will stand out in my mind for a long time to come.

The creation of this whole new ‘world’ was simply awesome.  For all intents and purposes, it is pretty much a dystopian society that is similar to ours in some ways, yet completely opposite in others.  The characters are amazing and immensely likeable – Abby is honorable, spunky, determined, and stubborn, and Jake sexy, brooding, dangerous, and….did I mention sexy?  😉

They both have a rocky path to travel, not just to make changes in their society to overcome misconceptions and to find a cure for the Reapers that someone doesn’t want found, but also in order to be together despite all the odds and factors against them.  Trust me, you will be cheering both of them on and hoping against hope that things will work out in their favor!

I was hoping to find that this was going to be part of a series….I feel like there was so much more to this story that we just didn’t get.  And that I really, really want!  There are characters I want to see more of, questions I want more answers to, and a world I want to see more of!  So far, no such luck though.  Crossing my fingers though that we get to see more in some future books!  Excellent book!
