Thoughts:  This was just an ‘enchanting’ set of stories – I honestly loved the way the author wrote these.  Both books managed to achieve a wonderful balance between author creativity, yet at the same time retaining enough of the original fairytales to be easily recognizable.  Whenever I have read other fairytale/romance spins, I am usually less than impressed but that is definitely not the case with this set!  The author did a fantastic job with these – they were witty, entertaining, sexy, and thoroughly enjoyable.  I loved the characters, and the authors amazing way of retelling the stories.  I hadn’t read any books by this author before, but I definitely plan to remedy that now!  I will definitely be looking for more books by this author.

Before the cure, Lieutenant Lyle Dalton’s job was simple: kill the Reapers. Now, under orders to inject all captured flesh eaters with the serum that restores their humanity, his Rangers at Fort Dougan face entirely new dangers. Someone wanted the Reaper cure badly enough to spill blood for it, and Lyle needs to steal it back if he hopes to hold the border.

Jane Fisher escaped Scraper crime boss Gideon Moore with only the clothes on her back. What he took from her can never be replaced, but her new home at Fort Dougan is the first safe one she’s known. Or was, until the remaining supply of serum was stolen, flown high into the mountains on Gideon’s command. Serving as Lyle’s guide through Scraper territory means revisiting her own personal hell, but it’s also an opportunity—for closure or revenge, Jane isn’t quite sure.

Beautiful, proud and haunted, Jane is a temptation Lyle’s worked hard to avoid. The mountains are the last place she needs to be. But if Jane can find the courage to face down a man like Gideon for the sake of the fort, no force on earth will keep Lyle from her side.

Thoughts:  I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed with this book – I never am when it comes to Eleri Stone’s books.  But I was excited for this one, since I was such a fan of the first book in this series, Reaper’s Touch – and while reading that one, I had already been feverently hoping for more in this series.  So glad it didn’t end there!

Things have changed a little in this book – thanks to the efforts of Abby and Jake from book one, Reaper’s are no longer slaughtered.  Instead they are captured and given the ‘cure’ – which means much more work for the Rangers.  The ‘cure’ is already hard to come by, but when their last stashes of the drug are stolen, Lyle has no choice but to go after it.  Jane’s familiarity with the area makes her the perfect guide, but unfortunately revisiting her past is not a pleasant experience.  It also puts her and Lyle and much closer quarters and face-to-face with temptation.

I actually enjoyed the whole story and characters in this one a bit more than the first – which is really saying something!  This one can be read as a stand alone, without needing to read the first book.  I happen to like getting all the intricacies of the relationships from reading all the books in a series in order, but you won’t be lost if you don’t.  The downside?  There is not a lot of Reaper action in this one, at least compared to book one, so if you’re looking for a lot of that you might be a little disappointed.  Personally, I still loved it!

The first book, Reaper’s Touch, is available now (which I also rated with an A)

No matter how much the paranormal politics of Atlanta change, one thing always remains the same: if there’s trouble, Kate Daniels will be in the middle of it…As the mate of the Beast Lord, Curran, former mercenary Kate Daniels has more responsibilities than it seems possible to juggle. Not only is she still struggling to keep her investigative business afloat, she must now deal with the affairs of the pack, including preparing her people for attack from Roland, a cruel ancient being with god-like powers. Since Kate’s connection to Roland has come out into the open, no one is safe—especially those closest to Kate.  As Roland’s long shadow looms ever nearer, Kate is called to attend the Conclave, a gathering of the leaders from the various supernatural factions in Atlanta. When one of the Masters of the Dead is found murdered there, apparently at the hands of a shapeshifter, Kate is given only twenty-four hours to hunt down the killer. And this time, if she fails, she’ll find herself embroiled in a war which could destroy everything she holds dear…
**Includes the bonus Kate Daniels story Magic Tests**

Thoughts:  When it comes to a series of books, I have to admit that the Kate Daniels series  is one of my absolute favorites!  For those who follow it, there are so many things that happen in this book that it is simply a must read.  The danger they face is far more potent in this book, as Kate faces not only the not-so-dead Hugh, but also her father.  They finally come face-to-face in this book, and that alone would render it worth reading.  But will Kate finally kill him (as she has been raised all her life to do)?  Or will fate – and Kate’s self-sacrificing personality – choose a different path?  In some ways, the meeting with Roland went kind of how I was expecting (though I think it may surprise a few) – but the decisions that are made after meeting Roland is what surprised me.  And I have to say lead to some super-sweet moments in the book for me.

For those of you new to the series – OMG, you have no idea what you’re missing!  You simply have to read this series – starting from the very beginning!  This is one of those series I definitely recommend reading in order, but it is an amazing series – especially if you love urban fantasy.

You honestly keep thinking this series just CAN’T get any better – but (as always) with Ilona Andrews, this husband and wife writing team proves that it definitely CAN.

*The bonus story is worth a read, too.  We get a little more insight into Julie and her life, and I look forward to seeing more of her world as well sometime in the future!*

Good girls don’t wear fur or fight over men, and they certainly don’t run around naked, howling at the moon.  But then, no-one ever called Fallon a good girl.  As a human unofficially mated to an Alpha werewolf, Fallon is being pressured to “become”… or be gone.  Her mate Aiden, the interim leader of the Olde Town Pack, is in a position that demands he either choose a wolf mate or leave the pack forever. No matter how hot the sex with Fallon is, he can’t ignore centuries of tradition.  Become a wolf or not: If only the choice were that simple! Fallon’s options are further clouded by the overt presence of other females desperate to be the Alpha’s mate. And when these bitches get serious, it’s not just claws that come out. If Fallon wants to keep her man and take the title, she’ll have to exert a little dominance of her own.

Review:  I am new to this series, and I had not realized that this was book 5 in a series before I started.  Given that, it was understandable that I found it a bit confusing at times.  I was also a bit confused and perturbed by the vibes I received while reading it as well – for the most part – at least to me – the story, dialogue, etc. read a bit like a new adult book, containing a certain level of immaturity.  However, it does contain adult content, and the odd mix of vibes from the book kindof left me not quite knowing what to think of it.  All in all, I will definitely have to go back and try reading from book one and see if that changes my perceptions somewhat.

Chase You To The Sun by Jocelyn Han

When Svetlana Ivanova lands a job on Desida One as trade liaison for the Russian Elite, she is over the moon. Even though her rich father owns the largest gemstone mine in the solar system, Lana wants to make it under her own steam. Working on one of the Desidan space stations is a dream come true.  Things take a turn for the worse, though, when she and her friends Tori and Alen are attacked by rebels on their way to Earth. Bruce Randall, a notorious space pirate and her father’s worst enemy, kidnaps her to hold her for ransom. If Mr. Ivanov doesn’t pay up, she’ll get hurt – badly. Bruce may have a handsome face, but his soul is darker than the night. Or so he claims, anyway.  Locked up in a mansion in an unknown location on Earth, Lana’s world slowly begins to unravel. Bruce is not just holding her hostage for money – in fact, he tells her things about her father’s company that she can’t believe. The pirate seems to know more about her mother’s death, five years ago, than she was ever told. And his kisses may be dangerous, but too good to resist.  Lana comes to realize that beneath the villainy and violence, Bruce is a man very different from the character in the stories told about him. A man with crushed ideals and a past haunting him everywhere he goes, no matter what he does.  A man she could fall for.
A slightly darker, erotic romance novel in the Stardust Series, for lovers of New Adult with a hint of Futuristic.

Review:  This book was another hit for me by Jocelyn Han.  The more I read from her, the more I like!  First off though, I am going to touch a few things about the series in general – if you’re not a big YA (Young Adult) fan, don’t let that deter you from her books – to be honest it’s easy to forget it in the overall storyline – which is a definite plus!  (I’m not a big YA fan)  Also, if it is the ‘futuristic’ aspect that might be causing you to hesitate, let me emphasis that while there is enough ‘futuristic/sci-fi’ emphasis to make it seem really intriguing – and give you a whole new world to uncover – it’s not so caught up into the details that you are left overwhelmed, lost, and confused.  Another thing?  While this one is a part of a series, it is also completely stand alone.

However, if you have read her other books, this one gave us a nice little visit with past characters that I just loved!  It was also an endearing story about a captive falling in love with her captor – and finding out that things were not necessarily as she thought them to be in the overall scheme of things.  On the downside, Bruce could be a little too rough and violent at times – enough that some readers might be turned off by it.  For the most part it was toned down, but there is one scene in particular that might be somewhat offensive to some.  So just read with a little caution.  Other than that, a great installment to the series, and I look forward to more works by her!

Lone Wolf’s Captive by Sherilee Gray

He let her father chase him off once, but this time nothing is getting in his way.  Fletcher Stone was forced out of the pack life, and now he makes his living as a hired thug, living day-to-day without honor or commitments. Shame over his choices and his lifestyle keep him from returning to the pack to claim Delaney — the woman who holds his heart. But when a rival pack hires him to kidnap her, Fletcher takes his chance. Now he must convince her that he never wanted to leave…and reveal a betrayal that will break her heart.  Delaney Jones has spent the last five years convinced the man she loves is dead. Nothing else would keep him from her. So when Fletcher shows up, whole, healthy, and very much alive, she’s devastated — and pissed off. He broke her heart once and he’s never going to get close enough to do it again.

Review:  For those who are big paranormal fans, this is a surprisingly good novella.  It may be short in length, but it’s not short in delivery – which is usually my issue with novellas.  It’s not a build up for a bigger novel that leaves you hanging with a lot of unanswered questions, and there are not huge gaps in plot or character development.  I enjoyed the storyline – even though it was a bit on the predictable side in some aspects.  What really brings this one to life is the characters are their intense desire, need, and love for one another.  I would love to see more from this author, and I look forward to more of her works!

Guarded by J.D Rivera

Title:  Guarded

Series:  Guarded Heart Book .5 (novella)

Author:  J.D Rivera

Rating:  A

Vanessa Smith has her heart guarded. She’s been married to a man that sleeps around and has made her think she’s ugly and undeserving. Everything changes when she is knocked down by the famous basketball player, Jackson Berrios. A friendship ensues and everything she thought she knew about men turns out to be wrong.  Jackson Berrios was out for a run in a new city when he made contact with the beautiful Vanessa Smith. He instantly knew she was different from most girls but can he make her see that he’s different from her cheating husband?

Review:  Guarded is a very cute, sweet, feel-good romance that I enjoyed very much.  I would have enjoyed it even more had it been a longer length book rather than a novella.  Usually I don’t enjoy them because I feel the length doesn’t usually give you enough time to get the full story behind the plot or the characters – and even less so when they are used as a prelude to a full length novel, with really dramatic cliff hangers.  That is not the case with this one – while this one is novella length, it is a complete story, and doesn’t leave you frustrated.

I loved the characters!  Vanessa is a gorgeous girl that is not really fully aware of how beautiful she is thanks to her lovely ex-husband.  While it sucks that we went through all this, it also makes her more relatable as a character.  I loved her honesty and frankness, and that is what really made me love her!  Jackson is amazing in his own way – he’s your typical playboy, but with a good heart.  And he certainly has his work cut out for him when it comes to wooing Vanessa!

While some readers might think it is too much of a ‘typical’ storyline, that it’s a shade to predictable, that it has nothing that really stands out, I have to say that I can see where they may feel that way.  However, that shouldn’t take anything away from this story.  There is nothing wrong with a good, solid romance – and the characters alone are enough to really a joy to read, and the way the writer tells it gives a nice interesting take on it.  If you’re a fan of a good romance, and in the mood for something that’s quick to read, you really can’t go wrong with this one.

Witch Interrupted by Jody Wallace

cover41138-mediumTitle:  Witch Interrupted

Series:  Shifter World Book #2

Author:  Jody Wallace

Rating:  B

Two decades ago, assassin Katherine Zhang faked her death to escape the Keepers, a secret council of witches who use magic to kill those who pose a threat to their kind. Once a powerful Keeper, she lives a solitary-but peaceful-life as a tattoo artist. Until a strange, handsome lone wolf named Marcus Delgado walks into her shop.

Marcus has his own reasons to hate the Keepers. A scientist who sacrificed himself to test the fragile boundaries between witch and wolf, he believes there’s a way to harness the combustible power between the two species. If he succeeds, he’ll be protected from the Keepers, but he needs a willing partner-and the delicious Katie just might be the perfect test subject.

Katie knows working with a wolf, an adversary she’s undeniably attracted to, is a dangerous proposition…no matter how tempting she finds Marcus’s proposal. But when a common enemy from their past threatens them both, working together might be the only option.

Review:  Witch Interrupted is a very original paranormal novel in which there is just a thin line between witches and werewolves.  Genetically, they are one in the same, however there is a whole story behind what causes witches to devolve into a werewolf.  Once that takes place however, it is impossible for the witch to find their way back to their former selves.  Marcus is seeking to change that.  Deciding to take place in events that lose him his witchy powers, he instead becomes a wolf, using his scientific background to see if he can reverse the changes.  Unfortunately, he needs a witch to help him – and having been betrayed before, he is at a loss as in who he might be able to trust without earning him the Keepers attention.  Enter Katie.  A former Keeper herself, Katie is also on the run – for her very life, and that of her families.  When she crosses paths with Marcus, can the solve the mystery between witches and wolves?

The creation of this whole genetic line linking witches and wolves was very interesting to read, and very original compared to other books I have read, with some amazing world-building.  The characters were all interesting, and it has a great plotline to it.  My only complaint was that it was a bit long winded at times, with the middle getting somewhat repetitive with the whole Katie gets captured by Marcus, she tries to get away – and repeat cycle.  Needless to say, the characters spend at exorbent amount of time not listening to one another and managing to build up a level of trust.  It could have been a bit narrowed down a bit for me, but overall a very good read.  It’s definitely a bit different for those who enjoy a good paranormal tale that is not your stereotypical fanfare.    Even though it’s part of a series, it is very much a stand alone novel, so no worries on that front.

Review:  I simply couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book after reading the first one in this series.  And in this case, the wait was well worth it!  I enjoyed this book just as much as the first one in the series.  So, if you’re looking for a little naughty to go with your nice, look no further than the antics at Club 3!

Carlie is your typical girl with low self-esteem – after being told over and over by her mother than she needs to lose weight, Carlie has begun to believe it.  And her experiences with men certainly hasn’t changed her opinion.  Lucky for her, she’s got great friends who support her and do their level best to convince her otherwise!

When one of them finds her happy-but-naughty ever after with one of the owners of the club, Carlie winds up attracted to one of the other owners of this BDSM club.  The problem is the one she wants sees her as strictly vanilla….and he’s…well, not.  But when he sees her application cross his desk, all bets are off!

Cade has a talent for striking the perfect balance between naughty and nice – while still leaving you with an excellent storyline that captivates you.  It’s hot, hot, HOT, while still maintaining enough heart to satisfy the most die-hard of romantics.  LOVE this series, and can’t wait for Book #3!!

Irresistible Magic by Deanna Chase

Series:  Crescent City Fae Book #2

Author:  Deanna Chase

Finding the perfect dress can be hell… especially when a stranger tries to gun you down in broad daylight.  Void agent and magical baker extraordinaire, Willow Rhoswen has been anticipating her first date with Talisen Kavanagh since she was sixteen. After eight years of waiting, there are only two things that can stand in her way–an assassination attempt and a new game-changing drug.  Talisen’s invented a new elixir that creates superhumans, ones that can rival vampire strength, and everyone wants it. Including the vampires. With Willow’s life on the line, he makes a deal with the devil, while she’s forced to accept the always-strings-attached protection from the most notorious vampire organization in New Orleans.  But when Talisen and his drug go missing, Willow will stop at nothing to find him, even if it means working with her vampire-ex, David. With souped-up humans, dangerous vampires, and more questions than answers, Willow has less than twenty-four hours to find him before everything changes forever.

Review:  After reading the first book in this series, Influential Magic, I simply could not wait to read this next title in the series.  Part of what I liked about this series is the fact that the main character Willow is not super powerful or anything – don’t get me wrong, she has some really cool powers – but there are a lot of things out there stronger than she is.  What makes her so strong is her determination to not give up, her strong ethical code, and her friends who are always there for her when she needs them.  I really enjoy her character.

As with a lot of books these days, there is a bit of a love triangle – with both males having you root for them for different reasons.  On one hand we have her ex, David, who dumped her by text message and ran off to become a vampire.  We’ve always know there was more to that story that what is revealed, and in this second book, we get some answers to some of our more burning questions regarding David.  And to be honest, there are still lingering feelings for David.  On the other hand, we have Talisen – the best friend who was always somewhat of a crush while growing up.  They have a lot of history, but things are heading toward a new level in their relationship.  I am personally rooting for Talisen in this little drama, and with the way the last book left off, I was really excited on where this relationship was going.  (sigh)  I have to admit though that I was disappointed in Talisen in this book.

However, it is not all about the romance – Deanna Chase tells an amazing tale that is both captivating and intriguing.  Once I pick up one of her books, it is really hard to put it down!  They are always action packed with excellent plot lines that only get more and more interesting the more you read of it.  After reading the first book in this series – while waiting for this book to release – I read the author’s Bourbon Street series and was amazed by how much I enjoyed that one as well.  Deanna Chase has fast become one of my favorite authors, and one that no matter what I pick up by her – I just fall in love with it!  Can’t wait to see where the rest of this series goes!
